Privacy Policy
Your files never leave your device. This policy explains the limited data we do handle — analytics and advertising, both off until you accept — and the choices you have. Last updated October 2026.
1. Your files stay on your device
Every conversion, compression, and edit on FreeConvert runs inside your web browser on your own hardware, using WebAssembly and standard browser APIs. Your browser reads the file into local memory, processes it, and hands you the result. The file is never sent to our servers or to anyone else.
Because there is no upload step, we never receive, inspect, or store your documents, photos, audio, or video. Closing or reloading the tab clears the file data from memory.
2. Your cookie choice
On your first visit, a banner asks whether you accept analytics and advertising cookies. Until you choose Accept, Google is told that consent is denied (Google Consent Mode v2): no analytics or advertising cookies are set and no ads are loaded. Choosing Decline keeps it that way.
You can change your choice at any time with the “Cookie settings” link in the footer of every page. Withdrawing consent stops analytics and advertising cookies from being set and deletes the Google Analytics cookies stored for this site. Cookies Google has already set on its own domains can be cleared in your browser settings.
3. Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4, a service of Google, to understand which tools people use and how the site performs. With your consent it sets first-party cookies (_ga, _ga_*) and records information such as the pages you visit, your device and browser type, the referring site, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. It never sees the content of files you convert.
Before you choose, or if you decline, the Google tag still loads but in a restricted mode: it sets no cookies and sends only cookieless signals (for example, that a page was viewed), which Google uses for aggregate modelling. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.
4. Google AdSense and advertising
FreeConvert stays free by showing ads served by Google AdSense. Ads load only after you accept cookies. Once they do, Google and its partners may collect and use information about your visits to this and other websites to show ads about goods and services that may interest you.
As required by Google’s policies, we disclose that:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visit to FreeConvert and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings: https://adssettings.google.com/.
- You can opt out of other vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at https://optout.aboutads.info/ or, in Europe and the UK, https://www.youronlinechoices.eu/.
- How Google uses information from sites that use its services: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
5. Storage on your device
FreeConvert itself keeps two small values in your browser’s localStorage: your light or dark theme (theme) and your cookie choice (fc-consent). Neither identifies you and neither is sent to us. The full list, including Google’s cookies, is in our Cookie Policy.
6. Hosting and technical logs
The site is delivered by Cloudflare. When your browser requests a page or file, Cloudflare may process technical connection data — IP address, browser user agent, requested URL, referrer, and time — to deliver the site, block attacks and abuse, and cache content. This data is not linked to any file you convert.
7. Conversion libraries
Video and audio tools use FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. It is downloaded once from a public CDN (unpkg or jsDelivr), checked against a fixed SHA-256 hash before it runs, and cached by your browser. The CDN sees an ordinary download request, never your files.
8. Your rights (UK GDPR and EU GDPR)
We rely on your consent for analytics and advertising cookies, and on our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website for technical logs. You have the right to:
We hold no accounts and none of your files, so most data about your visit is held by Google, and you can also exercise these rights directly with Google.
- Access the personal data processed about you.
- Have inaccurate data corrected.
- Have your data erased.
- Restrict or object to processing.
- Data portability.
- Withdraw consent at any time via “Cookie settings”, without affecting processing that happened before.
- Complain to a data protection authority, such as the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
9. California residents (CCPA / CPRA)
California residents may ask what personal information is collected, request its deletion or correction, and opt out of its sale or sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising. Declining in our cookie banner prevents advertising cookies on this site; you can also use the opt-out links in section 4 or contact us.
10. Children
FreeConvert is a general-audience utility and is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA and UK). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
