How does image compression work?
JPG and WebP compression discards visual detail your eyes barely notice — tiny color shifts and fine textures. Lower quality means more discarding and smaller files. The trick is stopping before artifacts appear, which is what the quality slider controls.
- 70% quality: visually lossless for most photos
- 50% quality: noticeable on close inspection, tiny files
- PNG stays lossless — savings come only from resizing
When should I compress?
Before uploading to websites, attaching to emails, or sending over slow connections. Sites load faster with smaller images; email attachments clear limits instead of bouncing.
- Web images: compress + cap width at 1600–2000px
- Email attachments: 60–70% quality is plenty

Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my images get?
Most photos from phones and cameras shrink 60–80% at the default 70% quality with no visible change. Screenshots and graphics vary — PNGs with flat colors often benefit most from converting to WebP.
Will compression damage my images?
JPG and WebP compression is lossy, but at 70%+ quality the difference is invisible in normal use. We never overwrite your originals — compressed copies download as new files, and if compression would not help, you get the original back untouched.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser. The files are processed in memory on your device and downloaded straight back to you.
PNG or WebP for the smallest files?
WebP usually beats PNG by 25–50% on the same image and supports transparency too. Switch the output format to WebP for graphics-heavy PNGs.
Can I resize images while compressing?
Yes. Set a maximum width under Advanced settings — great for making web-ready images, since resizing alone often saves more than compression.
