How does video compression work?

Video files are mostly redundant data: frames that barely change and details you never notice. Modern encoding (H.264 here) keeps the motion and drops the redundancy. Quality (CRF) sets how aggressive that is, and resolution sets how many pixels each frame carries.

  • Web-small: half resolution, aggressive quality — tiny files
  • Balanced: 720p with headroom for detail
  • High quality: 1080p for presentations and archives

Which settings for which job?

Email attachments usually cap around 25 MB — Web-small handles most clips. Messaging apps re-compress anyway, so send Balanced. For anything you will edit later or show on a big screen, use High quality and keep 1080p.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my video get?

Depends on the source. Phone videos and screen recordings often shrink 70–90% at Web-small. Already-compact files shrink less — the result panel shows your exact savings.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The encoder runs in your browser via WebAssembly and uses your own CPU. Your video is never transmitted anywhere.

Why is compression slower than online tools claim?

Video encoding is heavy computation, and here it runs on your machine honestly rather than on a server queue. The upside: no uploads, no waiting rooms, no size limits beyond your patience.

What does the mute option do?

It strips the audio track entirely. Useful for silent clips — you save the space audio was taking.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The encoding engine (about 30 MB) downloads once and is cached for the rest of your session. Later conversions skip the wait.
